Lesson Styles

At Divers English, our group lessons are designed for diving professionals and enthusiasts who want to improve their English skills in a collaborative setting. You can choose from two lesson styles, or a combination of both, to suit the needs of your group.

STYLE B. Personalized File Lessons
Start your group’s diving English journey with an empty file for each participant, which will grow into a customized diving guide over time. Your teacher will create tailored lesson content based on real diving scenarios, including diving vocabulary, communication strategies, and customer interactions. The content will be shared among the group, ensuring everyone is learning at the same pace while focusing on relevant, practical language skills. As each participant’s file grows, so will their confidence and ability to communicate in English during dives.

STYLE C. Free Conversation / Guided Conversation
Engage in diving-related English conversations as a group. Focus on improving your speaking and listening skills through role-playing scenarios such as dive briefings, customer interactions, and emergency situations. Your teacher will guide the conversation, ensuring that all group members are actively involved. You’ll also receive a file with essential vocabulary and discussion points from each lesson, giving the group a structured way to review and improve over time.

Combination Options
Flexibility is key! Your group can combine Style B (Personalized File Lessons) and Style C (Free Conversation) to create a well-rounded learning experience. This way, the group benefits from structured content while also enhancing conversation skills in real-world diving situations. The combination of both styles ensures that each group member is engaged and progressing at the same pace. If you wish to change the lesson style later, the group can decide together and adjust as needed.

Lesson Time

When it comes to mastering English for diving, time is a crucial factor. Unlike many other language schools that offer 40-minute lessons, we provide a full 1-hour session for every group lesson. This extra time makes a significant difference in your group’s learning experience.

More Time for Practice:
With 20 additional minutes in each session, your group will have more time to practice diving-related conversations, listening, and engaging in real-world scenarios. This ensures everyone is not just learning, but applying English skills in practical situations relevant to diving.

Deeper Understanding:
The extended lesson time allows your group to dive deeper into topics, ensuring all members fully understand the language and its application in diving contexts. You’ll have more opportunities to ask questions, clarify doubts, and reinforce your learning.

Collaborative Learning:
More time means more opportunities for group collaboration. Your teacher can focus on the needs of the entire group, ensuring that everyone—from beginners to more advanced learners—is progressing together and mastering essential diving-related English skills.

Better Value:
Our 1-hour group lessons offer better value for your time and money. Your group is investing in a richer, more comprehensive learning experience that helps you achieve fluency in English for diving faster.

Free 30 minute Trial Lessons

We offer a complimentary 30-minute trial lesson to all new diving professionals and enthusiasts aged 15 and above. This session is designed to help us understand your group’s current level of English, particularly in diving-related contexts, and identify the best starting point for your learning journey.

What to Expect:
During the trial lesson, your teacher will assess the group’s speaking, listening, and comprehension skills, with a focus on diving-related scenarios. Based on this evaluation, each participant will be placed in one of six levels: Foundation, Elementary, Pre-Intermediate, Intermediate, Upper Intermediate, or Advanced. This ensures that the lessons are tailored to the needs of each individual.

Handling Different Levels:
If the trial reveals that group members have significantly different levels of English proficiency, we may need to split the group into two separate classes. This ensures that each participant benefits fully from the lessons and receives instruction appropriate to their level. We believe this approach maximizes learning and allows for more focused attention for all students.

Personalized Feedback:
After the trial lesson, each participant will receive a feedback document outlining their strengths, areas for improvement, and personalized tips to progress in English learning for diving. This feedback will help guide your practice and address diving situations where English communication is crucial.

Language Support:
If anyone’s English level is not yet strong enough for effective communication, we will provide language support in Japanese to help them register and start learning at a comfortable pace.

Get Ready:
To help you prepare for the trial lesson, here are a few questions your teacher might ask:

  • "Can you tell me a little about your diving experience?"

  • "Why do you want to improve your diving-related English?"

  • "What do you find most challenging about communicating in English during dives?"

  • "Have you studied English before, especially related to diving or other professional contexts?"

These questions help us understand your group’s goals and learning needs to tailor the lessons accordingly.

Next Steps After the Trial:
After the trial, we will reach out via email to discuss the next steps, including scheduling and lesson options (Personalized File or Free Conversation). We’ll also answer any questions you may have about the course.

Flexibility in Level Placement:
Please note that while initial placement is based on the trial lesson, learning is dynamic. As you progress, there may be opportunities to adjust levels, ensuring all participants continue to be challenged appropriately.

Convenient Lesson Locations

At Divers English, we believe that learning should be both effective and convenient. To make your group learning experience as comfortable as possible, we allow you to choose a location that suits your group’s needs.

Flexible Locations:
For small groups of 2 participants, lessons can be held in cafes or restaurants near stations, making it easy to fit lessons into your daily routine. However, if your group exceeds 2 participants, lessons must be held at your dive shop or home. This ensures that the environment is conducive to group learning and that there is enough space for everyone to participate effectively. Simply call or email us to confirm if your dive shop or home is suitable for lessons.

Home Lessons Available:
For groups that wish to hold lessons at home, this option is available for an additional fee of ¥8,000 per month. This option provides flexibility and a relaxed learning environment for all participants.

Relaxed Atmosphere:
Whether in a cafe, restaurant, dive shop, or home, we ensure that learning takes place in a comfortable setting that allows for natural conversation and practical application of diving-related English. The chosen location helps create a productive and enjoyable learning environment for your group.

Your Choice, Your Convenience:
You are responsible for purchasing any coffee, drinks, or food during lessons at cafes or restaurants. This ensures that your group can focus on learning while enjoying a comfortable, relaxed atmosphere.

No Book Required: Personalized File Lessons

At Divers English, we don’t rely on pre-published textbooks. Instead, we offer Personalized File Lessons (Style B), where learning materials are created specifically for your group, based on real-world diving scenarios. This approach ensures that the content is directly relevant to your dive shop’s needs and English-learning goals.

How It Works:
Your teacher will design custom lesson materials that match the needs and level of the group. These materials will be stored in individual files for each participant, covering essential diving vocabulary, customer service phrases, safety procedures, and group communication skills. Each lesson builds on the previous one, and as your files grow, so will your group’s confidence and fluency in diving-related English.

Why No Textbook?

  • Tailored Content: Instead of a one-size-fits-all textbook, we provide personalized content that addresses the specific needs of diving professionals in a group setting.

  • Relevant Material: All materials are directly applicable to diving scenarios, ensuring the group is learning useful language for interacting with customers and fellow divers.

  • Flexibility: Lessons evolve based on the group’s progress, allowing the teacher to focus on what your team needs most as they advance together.

Our Syllabus: Structured Learning for Diving Professionals

Our syllabus is designed to guide you through 12 months of diving-related English lessons, with four lessons each month covering essential topics such as diving vocabulary, customer interactions, safety procedures, and communication skills. Each lesson is carefully crafted to meet the needs of both beginner and advanced divers.

What to Expect:

  • Practical diving scenarios incorporated into every lesson
